Robert Doyle, Lord Mayor of Melbourne

Below is the Lord Mayor's answer to a member's enquiry:

Melbourne City Council Elections

Rohan Leppert (The Greens)

The Greens will move to end car parking on the grass at Yarra Park early in the term of the new Council.

Catherine Ng

Great to hear from you.

I have spoken on record that I want to return Yarra Park as a park, not a car park.
The best protest timing is at right up to the next State Government election.
It is the State Government who stops returning Yarra Park as a park and threaten to take over from MCC if otherwise.

I have also spoken with Kate Brennan from Federation Square to seek her support in persuading the government to restrict parking at Yarra Park by utilising the existing car park af Fed Square as well as its proposed new car park.

You might have seen what they have done with the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show held at World Heritage Carlton Gardens.
We need to be organised and strategic on how to go about it.

Please feel free to cal me to discuss further 0418 xxx xxx.

Fowles

Thanks for your email.  I have talked to Will about his position on this and from what I understand he is of the view that the long term solution for MCG parking is underground.  I certainly share that view and the sooner it happens the better.  In the meantime it is important to minimize the harm that parking causes on Yarra Park in every way that we can.  I believe this is consistent with the what I have said over the past 4 years on Council.
Thanks

Mr Dow

Peter has read your email and asked that I respond on his behalf.

The issue of parking in Yarra Park is an issue that we have received a number of inquiries about but it is one to which there is not a simple response to.  If Peter and his team are elected I would be interested in working with the residents and the MCG to achieve a better balance between the rights of residents and the role of the MCG.  Striking this balance requires an in depth look at the arrangements and Peter and his team will be prepared to do that.

Subject: Yarra Park

I am writing on behalf of the Yarra Park Association (http://www.yarrapark.org ).

Your website does not state your position in relation to the continued use of Yarra Park as a car park for the MCG and the Melbourne and Olympic Park precinct.  During the term of the next council, the current parking agreement between Council and the State Government will lapse.

Will you and your team support a motion to give notice to the State Government that no new parking agreement will be agreed to by Council - thereby ending the use of Yarra Park as a car park?

If so, can you provide any evidence of your committment to this goal, such as letters sent by you, press releases, press clippings, speeches, votes during your previous term on Council etc?

We will be printing a leaflet for distribution to voters in the next few days, currently your ticket is not recommended so please get back to us as soon as possible.
